In a letter published on the Xbox website after the company's E3
conference this morning, Microsoft's Marc Whitten has revealed a new
Reputation system for Xbox Live designed to improve matchmaking and weed
out people who don't play fair.
"Your new Xbox Live Reputation plays a prominent and valuable role
rewarding healthy participation while reducing troublemakers and
cheaters," reads the letter. "A unified system across Xbox Live and all
of your games allows for you to have much more control over who you play
with while giving you new and exciting ways to get even move involved
in your community."
Reputation will also play a part in the Xbox One's new matchmaking.
"Smart Match expands options for game creators to match players based on
skill, language and now reputation," it says. This presumably means
that you can specify searching only for gentlemanly/gentlewomanly
players with a decent reputation score, as opposed to jerks.
That's as much information as has been given right now, but Xbox Live
has some significant problems with harassment and cheating, so it's
encouraging to see Microsoft attempt to tackle it as Xbox Live evolves.
