Microsoft Points, the digital currency long used for the Xbox Marketplace, could be replaced by credit, debit, and gift cards in the near future. Sources close to Microsoft's Xbox plans, according to The Verge, indicate that the long-rumored move to use real-world currency could be formally announced at E3 in June.
Gift cards available at retail stores appear, for the time being, to be separate from the existing Microsoft gift cards, which apply to Windows 8's Xbox Music, Xbox Games, and Xbox Video services.
The system would, theoretically, launch in time for the release of the next Xbox this fall, following suit with the Windows 8 departure from Microsoft's arbitrary currency. Previous rumors suggested users' existing Microsoft Points would transition into their real-world value, similar to the traditional "Wallet" system on PlayStation Network and Steam.
