A deal between Sony and Gaikai was heavily rumored leading up to E3, with sources suggesting that Sony was prepping a major upgrade to its cloud gaming support. Gaikai is no stranger to partnerships, having teamed up with Samsung just last month to allow customers to stream games from an app built into Samsung TVs. More recently, reports revealed that Gaikai was seeking $500 million to sell the company.
Specific details about how Sony will implement Gaikai’s cloud services haven’t been revealed, but Gaikai CEO David Perry commented that Sony seeks to “harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."
While the deal has been formally announced, Sony notes that the transaction will still need to undergo “certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions” before being finalized.
