Activision Publishing president and CEO Eric Hirschberg took
to the stage during Sony's Gamescom 2014 press conference to announce that
Destiny holds the record of highest number of pre-orders for a new IP.
This announcement comes not long after the cancellation of
several pre-ordered special editions of the shooter due to a shortage of
availability. Interestingly, just last week Hirschberg explained on an earnings
call that pre-orders are no longer the gold standard in predicting the success
of a game, instead being taken over by general awareness and purchase intent of
consumers.
Destiny is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3,
Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on September 9. It's first expansion, titled "The
Dark Below," is also set to release this December.
